What are Shiplap Boards?
Shiplap is milled with what is called a rabbet (at the joint), which is a step-shaped recess cut into the edge of the board that when met with the next board, creates an overlap. It’s a beautifully simple option for your home that adds a ton of character with its smooth face and clean lines.
Shiplap was originally designed as a siding to protect buildings from harsh weather, but more and more it is being used inside the home as a finishing product for the walls of people's homes. With shows like HGTV's “Fixer Upper” introducing everyone to the beauty of shiplap lumber, demand is high.
Our shiplap is most often milled with a square edge that fits flush with no gap at the joint. However, many clients choose to gap their shiplap to create the popular “nickel-gap” look on their walls and ceilings. In addition to the standard flat-faced square edged pattern shiplap, we also carry Half Log siding, Chink Log siding, and Dutch Lap siding, all milled with a shiplap joint.
SQUARE EDGE SHIPLAP:
Square edge shiplap boards are very popular and when most people think of shiplap they think of the square edge pattern. This pattern is flat-faced and it is an ideal way to create clean lines in your home with very basic tools.
Below are the species of lumber we carry that have a square edge shiplap pattern:
Poplar Shiplap: Our poplar is available in our run of the mill grade which starts at $2.25 per sq ft. This is an option where we suggest that you add about 10% for any waste you might have in your project. It's loaded with so much character that lots of people who are planning to paint actually change their minds once they see how it looks natural. BUT if you want to paint, poplar is a great option as a species.
We also carry our poplar in a benchmark grade. This is our flagship product and it starts at $3.20 a square foot. This is a very clean product and we typically suggest adding 5% or less for waste. If you are looking for a very clean, modern look, this is the grade of poplar for you.
Pine Shiplap: Our popular Run of the Mill shiplap is usually available in eastern white pine and ponderosa pine for $1.49 for unopened packs. This option has plenty of character and knots in it, but it also has more missing knots, cracks, and things that amount to waste - depending on how you view it. We also carry shiplap in what we call our Benchmark pine, which is a straight cut through the logs, offering a cleaner look with less of the missing knots, cracks, waste and character. The Benchmark is graded to the pattern you prefer and custom mill for your needs. The price of the Benchmark is $2.50 per square foot for unopened packs.
Barn Wood Shiplap: Our reclaimed barn wood shiplap comes from real KY barns and is mixed species. It usually comes in mixed widths of 3", 5", and 7" depending on availability and is milled to 1/2” thickness. Everything has been run through the kiln to kill off all of the bugs and take the moisture out before it’s milled into shiplap. Barnwood shiplap is often used as an accent wall, but can also be used throughout your whole home.
ACCENTS WALLS AND CEILINGS:
We have seen customers use just about everything we carry for accent walls. The main thing they are trying to accomplish is to add contrast in the room and draw attention to a specific area. This could be fireplace walls, tall walls in rooms with vaulted ceilings, or very simple areas in their kid's bedroom that helps mix up the repetition of drywall.
When installing an accent wall in their home many people's first option is barnwood shiplap, but an accent wall can also be done with cabin grade pine shiplap, and even poplar! There are many options for making your walls pop with shiplap accent walls.
When using shiplap for an accent wall it doesn’t always require a ton of space to make the wall really pop. We love seeing very small areas where the natural weathering and colors in the wood offer a unique look and feeling to an area that may have otherwise felt a little bit boring.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The lengths in packs will vary, but the most important thing to consider is that we try to discourage customers from expecting they’ll always be able to use full length boards. When you account for cracks, missing knots, and other board waste, you should expect butt-joints. Simply put, this is part of using lower grades of lumber. If you look at most every picture of our customers homes, you will see those character-filled boards and maybe even some missing knots installed in their homes.

QUICK TIP
Don't rush to nickel-gap your shiplap. When installed with a flush-fitting application, this can look just as clean and place less focus on your walls and more on the room.
